These initial exams give our dentists a better understanding of your oral health needs and ensure that your orthodontic treatment plan will be effective in improving your smile.
Your initial orthodontic evaluation plays an important role in the development of your smile and oral health. Ideally, children should have their initial orthodontic screening by the age of 7, as advised by the American Association of Orthodontists® (AAO®). This early examination helps our dentists to diagnose and address any potential issues as soon as possible, before they can develop further to cause damage and require additional care in the future to resolve.
However, if you or your child do not receive an early evaluation, we can still help. Orthodontic treatment is available for patients of all ages, from young children to teenagers to adults. In fact, about 25% of all patients who now receive orthodontic treatment are adults. As long as your teeth and mouth are healthy you will be able to receive orthodontic care without any complications.
Whether you are bringing your child in or coming to meet our dentists and team for yourself, an initial evaluation plays a crucial role in your treatment. During this evaluation our dentists will carefully assess your jaw and the position of your teeth to diagnose any problems that may be present. If we are providing this exam for your child, our dentists will also evaluate their jaw growth and the eruption of their teeth to determine the most appropriate age to commence orthodontic treatments.
We will also take X-rays, conduct a comprehensive oral exam and analyze your bite, oral musculature and any skeletal issues which could contribute to orthodontic problems. Our dentists and team may also discuss your oral habits and smile goals with you. All of these factors will allow our dentists and team to make a diagnosis and determine if orthodontic treatment is the right option for your smile.
If, after your evaluation, you plan to receive orthodontic treatment, our dentists and team will discuss your treatment options, including Invisalign® clear aligners, with you to create a treatment plan that meets your needs.
